What I Wish I Knew in the NICU

Babies are resilient.

Start taking notes earlier, every nurse during the delivery, every interaction, every question, every answer, who answered it, what time, etc.

Talk to the social workers, or the advocates, or the volunteers, they are not medical staff, it is an entirely different relationship than you have with the doctors & nurses.

Ask for a care conference. Ask for several, every couple weeks. Request who you specifically want to be there. Bring questions and write down the answers. Write some poetry about your experience and share it with the staff caring for your child.

Talk to other NICU parents, go to any NICU social events at your hospital, maintain friendships, they understand better than anyone.

Don’t fight with your partner, just let it go, figure it out later.

Take care of yourself; better yet, treat yourself. The nurses are caring for your baby well enough. You have to be at 110% the day your child is released from the NICU.
